- W145755535 abstract "The application of Gestalt coaching (or therapy ) as a modality for career counseling brings an interesting mix of existentialism phenomenology (Toman, 2007). Often referred to as a relying on here now approach, where it is believed that past future can be fully accessed in precious present, Gestalt coaching focuses on what is, where coach (or therapist) is a part of discovery process as a participant as much as client (Stevenson, 2005). First, this article expands on Gestalt therapy principles of awareness, use of self as a coach, provides a seven-step coaching model, finally, applies principles model to case of Frank. Use of Self: Awareness The Gestalt coach is trained to become an expert by remaining focused on present, on being present-centered. Latner (1986) explained that to be aware of present, to be totally in it, ensures that self is functioning as it is meant to. The self is us, accumulation of our experiences, our heredity, predispositions. As our awareness is enlarged, self comes closer to fullness adequacy (p. 101). The foundational goal is to be as fully present with oneself with client as possible, to thereby enable new awarenesses or heighten existing awarenesses in client system. Maintaining presentcenteredness enhances Gestalt coach's ability to collect important necessary data in order to understand client dynamics. Although data could, of course, be collected solely from provided organizational reports telephone or meeting interviews, the most valuable data source a [coach] has is direct observation of client system subsystems within work (Alevras & Wepman, 1980, p. 234). Immersion in immediate environment of client system brings direct observations, experiences, insights that would otherwise be severely diminished or simply unrealized. The awareness-building achieved through Gestalt coach's entrance into client system makes for a powerful intervention. The Gestalt coach gathers information about client through direct contact with observation of individual, group, or organization, then descriptively reports findings to client. In many ways, Gestalt coach acts as a mirror for client, adds value by sharpening clarity of reflection. Greater awareness about current situation permits for a more informed base from which to make action decisions. Alveras Wepman (1980) stated that coaches can help to identify conflicting behaviors in system, for example, and assist client in coming to an agreement about how to proceed in face of such knowledge (p. 234). Use of self as coach with Frank might include identifying for him how stressful it feels to just hear his story. This could be done metaphorically or empathically. Metaphorically, it could be stated as feeling like being between a rock hard place. Empathically, it could be described as feeling like I am suffocating describe how, as coach, I have been holding my breath as I listened to client next noticed that I have a knot in my abdomen. Generally, this form of use of self supports client to reframe situation possibly begin to see more than what is being told in story. Methods of Awareness In terms of technique, Gestalt practitioners identify two different, but complementary, forms of awareness in coaching process: The Gestalt approach to awareness acknowledges use of both active, directed awareness open, undirected awareness. Active, directed awareness describes procedures most often used by coaches action research practitioners, emphasizing structured, guided questioning of members of client system. Open, undirected awareness attempts to hold hypothesis formation in abeyance for a longer period of time. Open, undirected awareness is an attempt to reduce bias remain as naive as possible while engaged in diagnosis (Nevis, 1987, pp. …" @default.
