- W146151775 abstract "In Plant Growth Substances 1988, Zeevaart et al. (1990) stated that the biosynthetic pathway of abscisic acid in higher plants remained unknown, although the majority of available evidence did support the existence of an indirect, apo-carotenoid, pathway. Much progress has been made in the intervening period, with further evidence in favour of a universal apocarotenoid pathway being obtained. For example, the abscisic acid-(ABA)deficient aba mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana appear to be impaired in the ability to perform the epoxidation of zeaxanthin, resulting in greatly reduced levels of those xanthophylls which are potential ABA precursors (antheraxanthin, violaxanthin and neoxanthin; Duckham et al., 1991; Rock and Zeevaart, 1991). This chapter describes some of the work that has lead to the elucidation of almost all of the biosynthetic pathway of ABA, and allowed the key regulatory step to be tentatively identified (Fig. 1). Further discussions can be found in Parry and Horgan (1991a) and Parry (1991). Open image in new windowFig. 1Scheme for the biosynthesis of ABA in higher plants. The involvement of 9-cisviolaxanthin is unproven. ABA-ald: ABA-aldehyde; Xan: xanthoxin." @default.
