- W1464675963 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the electron microscopic methods that are used to study influenza virus-model membrane fusion. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Although focused on influenza virus-model membrane interaction, the technical consideration applies to enveloped virus-membrane fusion in general. Influenza virus (an orthomyxovirus) enters the cell by receptor-mediated endocytosis. The low pH of the endosomal compartment instigates an irreversible conformational change of the influenza virus hemagglutinin glycoprotein (HA), leading to fusion of viral and endosomal membranes and release of the viral nucleocapsid into the cytoplasm. Although detailed information on the low pH-induced conformational change of the HA spike protein is accumulating, the mechanism by which HA induces membrane fusion after its conformational change remains unsolved. Conventional techniques using electron microscopy are highlighted in the chapter." @default.
