- W1464796657 abstract "The hypophysial control of ovarian function in the ferret presents curious features. This is a seasonally breeding species in which follicular activity in the ovaries and estrogen secretion are marked during the spring and summer. However, the ovaries still contain well-developed follicles embedded in a mass of large interstitial cells in the winter and hormone secretion continues, for removal of one ovary causes compensatory growth of the remaining organ, presumably by reducing the blood level of gonadal hormone and relieving its inhibitory action on gonadotropin secretion. Further, the ovarian–uterine unit plays a significant part in controlling the release of gonadotropins and due attention should be given to its variety of response in evaluating the effect of any neuroendocrine intervention. Therefore, the response of the ovaries to gonadotropin treatment, the inhibition of ovulation by the corpus luteum, and the local control of luteal activity by the uterus are discussed in the chapter to provide illustrative examples of the interactions among ovaries, uterus, brain, and hypophysis." @default.
