- W1465222078 abstract "The modern era has witnessed rapid progress in carbohydrate chemistry and glycobiology. The understanding of the functions of sugar chains in vivo has been substantially advanced. Carbohydrates can be utilized either as carriers of drugs or as ligands or as regulators of the physical properties of drugs. The utilization of carbohydrates as ligands for targeting of drugs is especially noteworthy in this respect. Liver lectin, for example, is a sugar-recognizing protein present on the surface of the parenchymal cells of the liver, which recognizes specifically sugar chains that have D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine at the nonreducing terminal. The requirements of specific sugar chain structures for recognition by liver lectin have been studied in detail by Lee and co-workers. Heterogeneous branched CDs with a galactosyl residue(s) at the nonreducing terminal may be used as carriers of drugs to liver parenchymal cells. In addition, the existence of lectins that specifically recognize sugar chains with D-mannose is also well established." @default.
