- W146576747 abstract "Recent developments on the theory of the magnetic properties of transition-metal nanoscale alloys are reviewed. After some introductory remarks, a brief account of the relevant methodological background is given, which covers two important complementary electronic ground-state approaches, namely, density-functional theory and self-consistent tight-binding theory. The main body of this chapter is devoted to the applications of the theory to 3d–4d and 3d–5d alloy clusters and to the comparison with available experiments. As particularly relevant examples, we consider Fe n Rh m , Co n Rh m , Co n Pd m and Co n Pt m clusters, as well as CoCu and NiCu finite chains. The discussion emphasizes the roles of size, structure and composition on the magnetic properties, the interplay between chemical and magnetic order, and the possibility of tailoring the magnetic behavior as a function of size and composition. Finally, this chapter is closed with a summary of the main trends and a glimpse into future research directions." @default.
