- W146682796 abstract "The American black duck (Anas rubripes) has been selected as a species of priority concern in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan because of the apparent longterm decline in numbers of black ducks (Fig. 1), range expansion of the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), and frequency of black duck x mallard hybrids. The black duck is an important game bird, especially in the Atlantic Flyway where the species comprises a high percentage of ducks bagged in several Maritime provinces, New York, and New Jersey. Concern for black ducks has focused mainly on reducing harvest, stopping degradation and loss of wintering habitat, release of game farm mallards, and hybridization with mallards. A number of biologists, professional groups, and concerned citizens have proposed a moratorium on black duck hunting (Addy and Martinson 1968, Grandy 1983). In 1985, the Maine Chapter and Northeast Section of The Wildlife Society approved resolutions calling for cessation of black duck hunting. The purpose of this paper is to summarize technical information related to the population ecology and harvest of black ducks. We address the rate of decline in various indices with particular attention to comparisons among years, regions, and species. We attempt to relate trends in survival and natality indices to changes in habitat, breeding behavior, disease, contaminants, predation, harvest, and hybridization." @default.
