- W1468803431 abstract "This chapter discusses some of the molecular events in synaptic membranes that are involved in synaptic functions and that are subject to age related changes. Intercellular communication is one of the characteristic features of neuronal networks. An arrival of a nerve impulse at the presynaptic terminal induces a complex train of events, which consists of calcium influx, vesicle membrane and presynaptic membrane fusion, the exocytosis of the chemical transmitter, its diffusion across the synaptic cleft, and postsynaptic receptor activation, followed by receptor-mediated effects on ion channels in the postsynaptic membrane. There is increasing evidence to suggest that the age-related increase in the microviscosity of synaptic plasma membranes may cause the diminution of transmembrane signal transduction and synaptic plasticity. Especially the protein kinase C substrate protein B-50 seems of interest because its degree of phosphorylation exerts a feedback control in receptor-mediated membrane events. Its degree of phosphorylation, its brain localization, and content seem to undergo specific alterations during the lifespan of the rat. As an example of impaired synaptic plasticity, the reduced responsiveness of the hippocampal networks of aged rats to tetanic stimulation is discussed in the chapter." @default.
