- W1469853025 abstract "This chapter describes the salient features of amphibian metamorphosis. Because amphibian metamorphosis is initiated and sustained under strict hormonal control, the important role of external signaling molecules are also discussed in the chapter, in addition to the recent advances in the molecular processes that determine gene switching underlying morphogenesis and cell death during postembryonic development. Amphibian metamorphosis is an excellent experimental model for investigating vertebrate postembryonic development. It is obligatorily under the control of thyroid hormone for its initiation and completion. The action of thyroid is modulated by other hormones, in particular being potentiated by glucocorticoids and inhibited or retarded by prolactin. Metamorphosis also offers an ideal model for the analysis of programmed cell death (PCD), especially as a single hormonal signal can initiate cell death precociously in cells that would normally have survived up to their normal span of life." @default.
