- W147072279 abstract "Publisher Summary Although the presence of nitrogen-free phospholipids in extracts of mammalian tissues and plants has been known for many years, it is only recently that the phosphatidylglycerols have become of great interest biochemically. The lipid-protein interaction potentiated by diphosphatidylglycerol is only weakly or very weakly potentiated by the phosphatidylglycerol or phosphatidic acids and considerably less than the maximum by lysocardiolipins. This chapter discusses certain biochemical properties of phosphatidylglycerols. Phospholipase B from Penicillin notatum mycelium, which normally only attacks lysophosphoglycerides, hydrolyzes lecithin if certain activating lipids are present. Cardiolipin and phosphatidylinositol are the very effective and activate at very low concentrations, though a certain threshold concentration is needed before any hydrolysis occurs. The chapter also presents a study to observe the solubilizing effect of cardiolipin and discusses the existence of naturally occurring lipoamino acids." @default.
