- W1472494030 abstract "This chapter describes the properties of fluids and the rocks that contain them, liquids in motion through porous rocks, pore pressures, possible causes of abnormally high pore pressures, and sliding. Liquids in porous rocks behave the same as liquids in other containers. The free upper surface of a liquid at rest in a porous rock is horizontal. If the free upper surface is not horizontal, the water (all the water) is moving. Compaction under the gravity load of the overlying sediments and sedimentary rocks is one of the fundamental processes of geology and is important in petroleum geology and in the understanding of abnormal pressures. It affects stratigraphic thicknesses and relationships, pore–water movement and chemistry, and the migration of petroleum and probably also of base metals. Pore pressures are important in the mechanics of sliding and for the mechanical strength of rocks." @default.
