- W1472825910 abstract "From the standpoint of both structure and function the myelinated nerve fiber is a highly specialized component of the nervous system. It represents a very intimate association of a nerve cell process with a satellite myelinating cell. In the peripheral nervous system the myelinating cell is the sheath cell of Schwann (neurilemma cell) ; in the central nervous system it is a glial cell (oligodendrocyte probably). The entire history of nerve fiber growth and myelination could be satisfactorily studied in vivo. Correlation of results of in vivo histories of myelinated fibers with ultrastructural data obtained by electron microscopy has been very fruitful in some ways. The minute details revealed by good electron micrographs are absolutely essential for a clear picture of the exact relationship of the sheath cell to the axon and for the various modifications and adjustments exhibted by these during the processes of myelination, growth, injury, and repair. The chapter also discusses the observations and experiments on cutaneous nerves, and observations and experiments on the lateral-line system." @default.
