- W147497976 abstract "The measurement of natural abundance stable isotope signals in various ecosystem components provides a powerfully incisive means for identifying sources of natural or anthropogenic carbon (C) or nitrogen (N) entering an ecosystem, for studying its assimilation and transformation by photoautotrophs at the base of a trophic structure, and for following subsequent incorporation and transport through the food web. Indeed, in some situations, it offers the only feasible tool for studying subtle changes in marine communities resulting from human impacts. Neverthless, wherever possible it should be used in conjunction with other complementary forms of investigation. Unfortunately, the technique appears limited by many sources of potential isotopic variation likely to occur within the system being investigated, often hampering interpretation of results. This probably led to the coining of Fretwell’s law: “Warning! Stable isotope data may cause severe and contagious stomach upset if taken alone. To prevent upsetting reviewers’ stomachs and your own, take stable isotope data with a healthy dose of other hydrologic, geologic, and geochemical information. Then, you will find stable isotope data very beneficial” (cited by Kendall and Caldwell 1998)." @default.
