- W147667404 abstract "It is argued that the classical plane-wave model of volume homogeneous detonation only holds approximately and plane detonation waves with plane impedances cannot exist. This is established by the multiple characters of detonation fronts. To describe the variety of pressure fronts, one can consider arrays of pressure sources and use Huygens principle to sum up the contributions of the “n” single pressure sources at the point of observation “P.” Proper explanation of deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) processes is a weak point of all plane-wave theories. There are many ways to alter the impedance of a single source and a source array: the size and impedance of a single source may be increased by ambient static pressure or an external pressure triggering. It is important to realize that this external pressure shock remains in amplitude much below the critical level of direct initiation. In chemically reactive systems, this value is also altered by the motion of forced voids, induced by the rate of chemical decomposition. It is unlikely to stabilize a DDT process. The dark waves are because of the local absence of pressure sources, and the smooth/rough transition is realized by the source spacing." @default.
