- W14794623 abstract "Edaphic is a term pertaining to the influence or relationship of soil or other similar media to plant growth in contrast to atmospheric influence. The edaphic factors of interest with regard to air pollution response are principally the rooting medium water and nutritional status. Other factors include soil aeration and non-essential elements. Increased soil water stress usually results in decreased air pollutant sensitivity. Soil water status affects SO/sub 2/ responses and, like O/sub 3/, both soil-plant water stress and the pollutant itself may affect stomatal opening. Nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur nutrition affect pollutant response. Calcium nutrition affects fluorine toxicity. Increased salinity decreases oxidant injury in sunflower. The presence of certain concentrations of trace elements may affect plant responses to air pollutants. Cadmium, zinc, nickel, lead, copper and manganese have been found to interact with pollutants in various ways to exacerbate or lessen effects. 41 references." @default.
