Chemical reactions and hydrodynamic flow are tightly coupled processes. For example, precipitation and dissolution of mineral phases may alter diffusive and advective transport significantly. Furthermore, most sub-surface soil systems are only partly saturated with water. Saturation and desaturation processes may modify the chemical reactivity of the system via the solvent activity and sorbing surface exposure. Mathematical modeling of strongly coupled reactive transport in unsaturated media is still in its infancy. This paper is an attempt to identify the problems and to propose a rigorous mathematical approach to solve the fully coupled system, including the feedback on the hydraulic parameters after a porosity change. The approach has been incorporated in HYTEC which has been applied to leakage of sulfuric acid in a partly saturated subsurface soil." @default.
