- W1480449521 abstract "This chapter discusses selected examples of natural heterogeneous materials to illustrate the types of graded nano-/microstructures that have been found in biological systems. It talks about the spatial distribution of building blocks that defines the gradient, and also reviews the current understanding of structure–property relationships in such graded biological materials. The chapter begins with a discussion on the natural structures exhibiting chemical or hydration gradients. It provides examples of architectures graded in mineral or textured phase, and focuses on porosity gradients. The introduction of porosity in a structure is a natural means to minimize the use of resources but may unfavorably impact the mechanical stability. The chapter elucidates some of the universal design principles of natural graded composites and provides guidelines for the future development of bioinspired synthetic materials with unusual sets of functionalities and properties." @default.
