- W1481131563 abstract "Publisher Summary The application of robotic microarraying techniques and laser-based image analysis has lead to the development of DNA microarrays as a powerful tool for the global analysis of transcriptional responses of cells and microorganisms to perturbations—such as stress—in their environment. While the equipment necessary to synthesize chips is rapidly changing, designs are freely available and a number of groups have made excellent prototypes. Oligonucleotide-based DNA microarrays combine a number of attractive features that make them especially valuable for the analysis of genetic variation and the patterns of gene expression by large DNA-containing viruses. Consistent with inferences based on extensive work with individual probes, the patterns of viral transcript abundance differ sufficiently in various cell types suggesting that certain aspects of viral pathogenesis must take this fact into account. Combined with large cellular microarrays for the assay of cellular gene expression, global descriptions of transcript abundance in specific cells and tissues provides an important component of a total molecular description of the course of viral infection and pathogenesis, which are readily applied to the development of strategies for the treatment and palliation of virus-induced morbidity." @default.
