- W1481784019 abstract "The effect of a thin (typically 0.1–0.2 m̈m) coating on different fibers was investigated in various composites using different matrices and processes. The coating was selected to limit fiber-matrix bonding. Beneficial results were found on both strength and toughness as a result of coating SiC and Al2O3 fibers in various matrices. Generally, the stronger the fiber-matrix bonding without the coating, the greater its benefit on mechanical behavior; e.g., use of coated SiC fibers in a SiO2 matrix resulted in a four-fold increase in strength and changed the failure from brittle to tough (about a 100-fold increase in toughness base as indicated by areas under the load-deflection curves). Use of the coating resulted in retaining somewhat better mechanical properties after high temperature e.g., 1000°C) oxidation exposure of some composites." @default.
