- W1482640073 abstract "The purpose of the present study was to detect and describe speech strategies and speech tactics represented in the text type “political memoirs”. In particular, the research was based on the pragmatic and linguistic analysis and stylistic interpretation of the memoirs by J. Kennedy, R. Reagan, B. J. Clinton, and B. Obama. The result of the study is summarized as follows. First, as the text type of political memoirs relates to political discourse the author of the memoirs struggles against his political opponents. Second, in order to realize his intentions the author implements specific speech strategies and tactics. In the focus of the study are the following two strategies: 1) a positive author’s image strategy and 2) a formation of political opponent’s negative image strategy. The speech strategies were classified according to the semiotic “we”-“they” opposition based on the idea of the political discourse participants. Meanwhile the first strategy is represented with the tactics of positive author’s self-representation, intimisation, inclusion, the author’s likening to the addressee, reference to a personality of authority, and self-justification, the second strategy is realized via the following tactics: 1) opponent’s critical analysis, 2) disclosure, 3) failure prediction, and 4) threatening. In addition, the study reveals the linguistic means that the author of the memoirs uses to represent particular speech tactics." @default.
