- W1483284520 abstract "Bivalve molluscan shellfish are filter-feeders and can concentrate contaminants from the water column in their growing environments. Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus are human pathogens that occur naturally in marine environments and have been frequently isolated from molluscan shellfish. Consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters, contaminated with V. parahaemolyticus or V. vulnificus may lead to the development of acute gastroenteritis characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea and low fever. Outbreaks of V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus infection resulting from the consumption of raw or undercooked oysters have been frequently reported around the world. Infection caused by V. parahaemolyticus or V. vulnificus associated with shellfish consumption is a public health concern. In addition, marine toxins and viruses (such as norovirus and hepatitis A virus) may also be present in shellfish harvested from contaminated marine environments. These risks can be limited by proper handling and processing of shellfish following harvest." @default.
