- W148436763 abstract "Publisher Summary Varying amounts of electrostatic charge accumulate at the top of clouds because of the variations in the downward air–earth current density through the troposphere in the global electric circuit. Cycles of condensation, freezing, sedimentation, and evaporation of clouds deplete them of aerosols that are effective (without electrostatic charge) as ice-forming nuclei (IFN). Highly charged aerosols are produced by the evaporation of highly charged drizzle droplets into the clear surrounding air. Electrostatic charge on aerosols enhances their effectiveness because IFN allows formation of ice when these charged residues of evaporated droplets, which would be less effective IFN without charge, mix back into the cloud. This can explain the observed discrepancy between measurements of initial ice at the top of clouds. It can also explain the many observations of correlations between variations in the solar wind that modulate current flow in the global electric circuit and variations in tropospheric dynamics of the sort produced by changes in rates of ice nucleation and sedimentation." @default.
