- W1484571221 abstract "Since the first report on cancer stem cells (CSC) in 1997, significant advances have been made in the field of experimental research on CSCs in hematopoietic and solid tumors. Growing evidence from these studies has demonstrated that CSCs are present in the malignancies and are responsible for the tumorigenesis and recurrence of malignancies. Importantly, CSCs have been found to cause drug resistance and promote cancer progression. Therefore, targeting CSCs could be a novel and efficient therapeutic strategy for the treatment of various cancers. However, the complexities of CSC markers in various cancers and the low sensitivity of these cells to existing therapeutics are challenging for designing novel therapeutic strategy. In this chapter, we will review the current knowledge about the markers of CSCs, the roles of CSCs in drug resistance and cancer progression, and the application of novel therapeutic strategies targeting CSCs for achieving better treatment outcome of patients diagnosed with cancers." @default.
