- W1485188421 abstract "In the 1940s, Huggins and Hodges (13) showed that androgen withdrawal alleviates the symptoms of prostate cancer. Since then, hormonal therapy has remained the standard treatment of the advanced form of the disease. Despite the improved early diagnosis of prostate cancer, about one-third of patients are still diagnosed at a clinically advanced stage (21). The majority of prostate cancer patients receive hormonal treatment at some point. Most initially respond to the therapy (11). Eventually, however, the disease progresses despite ongoing androgen withdrawal. Since there is no effective treatment for hormone refractory prostate cancer, the prognosis after relapse is poor. The failure of endocrine therapy is one of the main problems in the management of prostate cancer (10,37)." @default.
