- W1485358131 abstract "H istory has demonstrated that maternal immunization to provide passive immunization for the fetus/neonate is not only a possibility, but a process that is repeated frequently on a daily basis around the world. In fact the idea, that the neonate could be protected by active immunization of the mother, is 112 years old. In 1879, Burkhardtl reported that infants born of mothers who had “Jennerian vaccination” during pregnancy were protected from the “vaccine virus” during the first days of life. This observation was reported nearly 80 years after Jenner first published his first 23 cases of smallpox vaccination. It was not too long after these first observations that it became clear that certain common infectious diseases such as diphtheria, poliomyelitis, scarlet fever, measles and others do not manifest themselves in the first few months of life because of passively acquired antibodies from the immune mother.*s3 Likewise, it is now known that other infectious diseases attack the neonate and young infant because they failed to acquire antibody from mothers who had either no immunity or low levels of antibody. For example, a major correlate of early-onset, acute sepsis of the newborn from type III group B streptococci is the low level of typespecific maternal antibody to the type III capsular polysaccharide.* Logic would dictate that if we could provide the pregnant woman with antibodies that could be transferred across the placenta to the fetus/neonate, we would go a long way towards preventing common and serious infections in these susceptible neonates. It is not possible to provide the fetus/neonate with enough antibody by passively immunizing the mother since the half-life of IgG is not long enough to provide adequate levels to the fetus in" @default.
