- W1485569059 abstract "Globally, cardiovascular disease causes over five million premature adult deaths, and it is the single most common cause of death in the United States. An increased sudden cardiac death (SCD) risk also occurs in cardiomyopathies and valvular heart disease and ventricular hypertrophy, all of which lead to a life-limiting impaired ventricular function and a life-threatening risk of re-entrant arrhythmias. The most common immediate cause of SCD is ventricular tachyarrhythmia or fibrillation, which prevents the rhythmic pumping of blood and maintenance of circulation. The most effective treatment is the termination of ventricular fibrillation by electrical defibrillation. There is scope for reducing SCD by reducing the time to intervention, but positioning an automatic defibrillator within a few minutes of most of the population all of the time is clearly impractical even in wealthy societies. Lifestyle adjustments that reduce the risk factors associated with sedentary, high-cholesterol, and obesity-favoring diets and smoking are highly effective but difficult to implement in commercially competitive open societies. Medical approaches to arrhythmia prevention would have the greatest impact if applied to the large population of asymptomatic patients at risk for coronary artery disease. They must have a very low incidence of toxic side effects because many more patients would receive preventive treatment than those who would actually benefit by the prevention of SCD." @default.
