The number of recoveries from this formerly universally fatal infection is a most gratifying experience in medicine and the therapeutic achievement is attributable directly to the antimicrobial efficacy of penicillin. In general, most studies indicate that approximately 70 per cent of all patients treated for the infection recover, although there is a considerable discrepancy in mortality rates among individual reports.1-5One perplexing feature of specific antimicrobial treatment, quite apparent lately, is the lack of a recent decrease in the mortality rate from the 30 per cent to 35...Bibliography1.
