• W1487412742 abstract "Published research on the effects of middle school counseling comprises a small proportion of all counseling research. A literature search of the last decade for reports of research on the effects of intervention techniques or programs for middle school students revealed less than 40 reports. About one fourth were reports of survey research of counseling needs and effectiveness (Cornille, Bayer, & Smyth, 1983; Haughey & Bowman, 1980; Wiggins & Moody, 1987; Williams & Haynes, 1983; Zachow & Carter, 1985), and studies of counselor role perception (Bonebrake & Borgers, 1984; Kameen, Robinson, & Rotter, 1985), and studies of the effects of counselorinherent variables on the counseling process (Bernstein & Figioli, 1983; LeCroy, 1986). The remainder were reports of studies of counseling program or technique effectiveness, many of which will be reviewed here. The extent of middle school counseling research is limited compared to that conducted at elementary or high schools. Gerler (1985) reviewed research reports on the effects of elementary school counseling that were published in Elementary School Guidance & Counseling between 1974 and 1984 and cited over 30 research reports. There were no research reports in a recent issue of The School Counselor , which was devoted to middle school counseling (Cole, 1986). When considering the number of articles authored by school counselors, the representation of research on the effects of middle school counseling is further limited. The literature search revealed less than 10 reports authored or coauthored by middle school counselors. These circumstances have not improved from earlier times. Fewer than 50% of the research studies published in The School Counselor between 1967 and 1979 were authored by school counselors (Brown, Hartman, & Fuqua, 1981). Cottle in 1957, Rothney and Farwell in 1960, and Gamsky in 1970 confirmed the short supply of research and encouraged counselors to conduct their own research. Still, in 1985, Wilson stated that [d]espite increasing pressure from professional organizations and the public . . . counselors [had] not responded to the challenge (p. 111).
