- W148860154 abstract "A substorm is a time-dependent process in three dimensions involving four outstanding research topics in basic plasma physics: magnetic reconnection, CD, turbulence, and particle acceleration. The brightening of a small element of an existing auroral arc can be taken as the defined onset of a substorm. After the substorm onset the auroral oval becomes clearly bifurcated, consisting of two components: the oval aurora in the latitude range of the preonset oval, and the bulge aurora that emerges out of the oval. The bulge aurora expands poleward out of the presubstorm oval, westward as well as eastward, from the premidnight onset location. The entire substorm behaves as a single component system but with many different aspects. The most spectacular auroral display is the WTS that initiates the EP of substorms. The most reliable indicator of substorm onset is the sudden brightening of a small portion of an existing auroral arc due to increased particle precipitation. The substorm current diversion of the three-dimensional current system is responsible for most of the effects that can be seen by ground-based magnetometers at substorm onset. Magnetic perturbations caused by the type 2 current system can be detected on the ground as the auroral electrojets by a chain of magnetic observatories. Diversion of the cross-tail current by the type 1 current system starts at onset through the midnight ionosphere. The wedge shape of the projected equivalent current accounts for the name “substorm current wedge.”" @default.
