- W1488908617 abstract "This chapter introduces issues of culture which may influence and modulate experiences of wellbeing in aging around the world. The aging of indigenous populations is rapid and indigenous populations and ethnic minority groups have disparities in longevity, health, and wellbeing that are not totally explained by socioeconomic disadvantage. Views of wellbeing differ and measures developed in Western culture may be misleading. The involvement of the cultural group of interest is essential to provide an appropriate interpretation of results for studies of quality of life. Wellbeing of “more than the body and mind” is needed to be well for indigenous and minority cultures. Māori (indigenous peoples of New Zealand) elders gain wellbeing from contribution to Māori society and wellbeing is independently related to knowledge of and participation in cultural practices. Similar trends around the world suggest that strong cultural beliefs and practices may moderate the influence of disadvantage in older ages. Increased attention to appropriate holistic understanding of wellbeing in minority and indigenous populations is called for." @default.
