- W1489076268 abstract "This series of interconnected studies in the ritualpractice of the groups associated with the earlyChristian movement which are now usually now describedas 'Gnostic', is a modest essay towards a survey ofthe subject, last undertaken by Bousset in 1907 andFendt in 1922.Of the three main groups of sects which becamedistinguishable during the investigation, these studiesare concerned with two:- those here designated 'Cultsof Power', and those showing signs of having theirorigin in the separation of church from synagogue.A consideration of the third group, here entitled 'TheGentile Counter-Churches', is omitted, to keep thisdissertation within manageable compass; it would havebeen comparatively brief, because of the paucity ofevidence. At the outset, it had been expected thatgeneral characterizations would be possible. However, the repeated discovery that the expectation of unifyingcharacteristics, or even of some sort of underlyingunitive rite, was not substantiated hy the material, eachdetectable ritual association on its own, withthe minimum recourse to evidence from other contexts, except to note the clearest parallels and probableborrowings.Chapter One lists the questions asked; surveys thepresent literature and the sources (both patristicand sectarian); lists and classifies the sects to beexamined; and discusses method.Chapter Two examines the 'Cults of Power', aftera definition of that term and a characterization ofsuch cults, past and present. The topics are:- SimonMagus; Menander; Satornil; Cerdo; the Carpocratians;Marcus and the Marcosiansj and Elchasai. In the courseof this chapter, in connection with Marcus, a majorsuggestion is made as to the original order ofAdversus Haereses I, which affects all presentationsof Valentinian liturgy, and hence of all 'Gnostic'worship in general.Chapter Three argues liturgicalcontinuity, combinin baptismal devotion with 'Ascentof-the-Soul' Ri aI, can be traced through the usersof the Gosp of Thomas, the Peratae, the Naassenes/Chapter Three argues that a degree of liturgicalcontinuity, combining a baptismal devotion with'Ascent '-ritual, can be traced through the users ofthe Gospel of Thomas, the Peratae, the Naassenes/Ophites,Justin the Gnostic and the 'Phibionites' of Epiphanius, and certain Jewish-Christians who claimed a 'James'-tradition. (Apparently cognate groups, the users ofpokryphon of John and of the Petrine apocryphafrom Nag Hammadi, offer insufficient liturgical datato be incorporated here). It is argued that this complexof sects derives from the chaos of the separation ofChristianity from Judaism." @default.
