- W1489118210 abstract "Basin modeling is the term most often used to describe the modeling of the series of processes that include generation, expulsion, migration, trapping, and preservation of hydrocarbons. This definition includes components of both sedimentary basin modeling and petroleum system modeling. Petroleum system modeling attempts to recreate the history of the hydrocarbons within a specific system. Basin modeling often considers several petroleum systems simultaneously. Maturity modeling forms one part of system modeling, but system models also describe fluid flow, which is omitted in maturity modeling. Because of these differences and because system and basin models are usually two dimensional, simulation times for system and basin models are longer than for maturity models. Care must be taken in the design of such models to maintain a high degree of user interactiveness and permit convenient optimization of input data and performance of sensitivity analysis. Existing models have yet to solve all these problems. Additional problems that remain unsolved include quantification of expulsion and migration loss, scaling problems and resolution of small features, inability to predict tectonic fracturing and fluid flow through fracture permeability, and in bility to handle tectonic complexity. These weaknesses limit applications in some areas and render these models semiquantitative under the best of circumstances. Petroleum system models are useful tools for describing the behavior of hydrocarbon systems. They are potentially even more powerful for stimulating thinking than for providing final answers. System models have a bright future if some major improvements can be made, if they are designed and built with the technical and philosophical needs of explorationists in mind, and if proper training for model users is provided. Sensitivity analysis is essential for proper application of all models in exploration." @default.
