- W1489233814 abstract "OBJECTIVE: To compare volume loss over time in brain regions associated with emotion to those associated with cognition in a group of healthy aging volunteers. BACKGROUND: In contrast to well-recognized declines in cognitive functions such as memory and processing speed in older adults, emotional well-being seems to be maintained or improved as part of healthy aging. The delegation of emotional or cognitive functions to different regions of the brain is widely recognized. We hypothesized that brain volumes of regions associated with cognition would show significant longitudinal atrophy compared to regions associated with emotional processing. DESIGN/METHODS: Research participants were enrolled in the Hillblom Aging Study at the Memory and Aging Center of the University of California San Francisco. Participants were aged 60-100 with minor or no memory problems, with a Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) of 0 and a Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) score of 蠅28. Scans were performed at every visit, with subjects receiving between 2 to 8 scans each on a Siemens TIM Trio 3 Tesla MRI scanner.Volumetric analysis was performed by trained research assistants using Freesurfer. Cortical regions were selected from two widely available atlases. Volumes included as supporting cognition included bilateral midfrontal and lateral frontal gyrii, lateral parietal and temporal cortex, and medial temporal lobes. Volumes associated with emotion included bilateral amygdala, rostral anterior cingulate, insula, orbito-frontal cortex and nucleus accumbens. A longitudinal multiple effects model to compare regional changes within individuals over time. RESULTS: A longitudinal multiple effects model again demonstrated a significant volume decline in cognitive regions, but no significant decline in emotional regions. CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis confirms that cerebral volume loss has a neuroanatomical predilection for regions associated with cognition rather than emotion in healthy aging. These findings provide longitudinal imaging corroboration to the observations of emotional preservation in older age. Study Supported by: The Larry L.
