A striking laterality to the left side was identified. In 83 per cent of the patients wolffian structures were present and in 20 per cent microscopic evidence of a terminal nubbin of hyalinized, calcified or hemosiderin-containing tissue was noted. These findings strongly suggest that in most instances of monorchism a testis had been present and had undergone subsequent in utero degeneration. Characterization of the hormonal changes associated with unilateral absent testes was done by determining fasting morning levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. In a subgroup of monorchid boys and age-matched prepubertal unilateral cryptorchid boys luteinizing hormone release factor stimulation also was performed to determine if endocrine analysis could predict the absence of 1 testis. © 1986 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byKaye J, Levitt S, Friedman S, Franco I, Gitlin J and Palmer L (2018) Neonatal Torsion: A 14-Year Experience and Proposed Algorithm for ManagementJournal of Urology, VOL. 179, NO. 6, (2377-2383), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2008.RENZULLI J, SHETTY R, MANGRAY S, ANDERSON K, WEISS R and CALDAMONE A (2018) CLINICAL AND HISTOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TESTICULAR REMNANT FOUND ON INGUINAL EXPLORATION AFTER DIAGNOSTIC LAPAROSCOPY IN THE ABSENCE OF A PATENT PROCESSUS VAGINALISJournal of Urology, VOL. 174, NO. 4 Part 2, (1584-1586), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2005.Lee P and Coughlin M (2018) The Single Testis: Paternity After Presentation as Unilateral CryptorchidismJournal of Urology, VOL. 168, NO. 4 Part 2, (1680-1683), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2002.CENDRON M, SCHNED A and ELLSWORTH P (2018) HISTOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE TESTICULAR NUBBIN IN THE VANISHING TESTIS SYNDROMEJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 3 Part 2, (1161-1163), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1998.Palmer L, Gill B and Kogan S (2018) Endocrine Analysis of Childhood MonorchismJournal of Urology, VOL. 158, NO. 2, (594-596), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1997.Rozanski T, Wojno K and Bloom D (2018) The Remnant OrchiectomyJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 2, (712-714), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1996.Elder J (2018) Laparoscopy for Impalpable Testes: Significance of the Patent Processus VaginalisJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 2 Part 2, (776-778), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1994.Diamond D, Caldamone A and Elder J (2018) Prevalence of the Vanishing Testis in Boys with a Unilateral Impalpable Testis: Is the Side of Presentation Significant?Journal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 2 Part 1, (502-503), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1994.Turek P, Ewalt D, Snyder H, Stampfers D, Blyth B, Huff D and Duckett J (2018) The Absent Cryptorchid Testis: Surgical Findings and their Implications for Diagnosis and EtiologyJournal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 3, (718-720), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1994.Gill B, Kogan S, Starr S, Reda E and Levitt S (2018) Significance of Epididymal and Ductal Anomalies Associated with Testicular MaldescentJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 2 Part 2, (556-558), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1989.Saito S and Kumamoto Y (2018) The Number of Spermatogonia in Various Congenital Testicular DisordersJournal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 5, (1166-1168), Online publication date: 1-May-1989.
