- W1489645589 abstract "The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a method that has been recommended for estimating the body components (fat mass, fat-free mass, bone mineral density and bone mineral contents), but which, initially, intended exclusively to estimate the bone mineral density. This way, DXA has been proposed as an alternative to validate the methods that estimate body composition in studies of populations that are based in indirect methods, such as anthropometry and bio-impedance. However, some aspects related to the indications and limitations of DXA are still unknown. Based on what was said, this review aims at exposing the definitions, principles, validity, advantages and limitations of DXA in estimating the body composition according to age groups and gender. The articles that were analyzed were selected from the following electronic database: Scientific Electronic Library On-line (SciELO), National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE and Science Direct Online), published between 1990 and 2007, using the indexers DXA and body composition. The studies point at an elevated agreement in the intra-individual measures, mainly when detecting alterations in the body composition. However, care should be taken when selecting the equipment, as well as when selecting the cases in which the method will be used, because the use of constant hydration of fat-free mass, the differences presented between the equipments, and different versions of the same equipment, besides the anthropometric limitations such as girth, weight and proportion of the individuals may cause considerable errors in the estimates when they are not controlled. Finally, it is observed that DEXA is a valid alternative to estimate the body" @default.
