- W1489752344 abstract "The Decade That Shaped Television News: CBS in the 1950s. Sig Mickelson. Westport, CT: Praeger, 1998. 264 pp. $39.95 hbk. Authors over the past fifteen or so years have written about the undoing of CBS News, lamenting the dismantling of a great news organization. In his book, Sig Mickelson indicates CBS television never really started on a solid footing. It probably was not Mickelson's intention to write that type of book. The Decade That Shaped Television News is not written with the underlying anger, disappointment, or indignation that those books usually contain. Mickelson gives us a series of stories, each of which could stand on its own. But as a whole, the book provides a somewhat unflattering picture of CBS News. Mickelson, the first president of CBS News and the man who helped consolidate the radio and television news divisions into an autonomous department of the network, gives us his opinions and a chronology of the evolution. It is sometimes hard to follow. Especially in the beginning, Mickelson seems to give a kaleidoscopic array of statistics about television sets, adoption rates, viewers, and stations. It gets confusing because he uses different time periods, and it's easy to get lost in the numbers. Mickelson also jumps around in time. It is not always easy to figure out just where he is or what year it is. Those complaints aside, this is an interesting if somewhat one-sided look at how TV news evolved. CBS, of course, already had a news commitment on radio, but, as the cliche goes, television was new and untested, and there were many who thought it would be a passing fad. Mickelson was not one of them, but he faced barriers in getting news on the air. The relatively short chapters are arranged as a series of stories. Some are about specific incidents, such as trying to cover the coronation of Queen Elizabeth and the resulting furious and silly competition with NBC. Others are about innovations and evolutions, such as the struggle to create an in-house film unit rather than rely on newsreel makers for film. Mickelson occasionally indulges in some selfpromotion (he takes credit for applying the term anchorman to TV news) and comes close to gloating each time he beats NBC to the punch. But he also admits his and CBS's mistakes. It is those mistakes, taken together through the course of the book, that, on reflection, reveal that CBS in the 1950s was not the Tiffany network as many would have it believed. …" @default.
