- W1490236476 abstract "The drug abuser makes irrational choices. She or he sacrifices substantial, long-term gains (e.g., physical and psychological health) for the sake of short-term drug effects. Delay discounting is an inductive theory of intertemporal choice. This chapter focuses on the relation between delay discounting and drug abuse. Despite the ubiquity of this relation, more research is required to resolve the nature of this relation - specifically, whether steep delay discounting serves as cause or consequence of drug abuse, or whether both are the products of a third variable. This chapter provides empirical, conceptual, and methodological evidence supporting all three possibilities, although the evidence suggesting that steep delay discounting precedes the acquisition of drug taking in nonhumans is stronger than the opposite relation. The chapter also talks about the procedures used most widely to assess delay discounting in both human and nonhuman subjects." @default.
