- W1490338675 abstract "Chinese Among Others: Emigration in Modern Times, by Philip A. Kuhn. Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield, 2008. xii + 431 pp. US$49.95 (hardcover). After 1960s, comprehensive histories of overseas Chinese went out of fashion. Today, as study of Chinese overseas is becoming more integrated with study of China itself, eminent historians of country are once again displaying interest in subject. Instead of encyclopedic coverage of a Victor Puree 11, however, Philip Kuhn' s Chinese Among Others is conceived as a of the major variants of Chinese emigrant experience ... in certain characteristic environments (p. 2), notably metropolitan centers of West, colonies, and white settler societies of America and Australasia. Unlike studies of 1960s - and characteristically of current trend towards world history - Kuhn treats this as part and parcel of both of China and that of global flows of goods, ideas and people. Thus, he sets emergence of Chinese trade and revenue farming in precolonial Southeast Asia against background of growing demographic pressures in China and intensification of internal migration. He points out that merchants' dependence on official patronage in China prepared them for revenue-farming arrangements with Southeast Asian kings; that family structures in South China both aided and adapted to migration; and that native-place associations both inside and outside China effectively served as guilds, securing occupational turfs and later, in era of mass labor migration, as debt enforcers. He presents engaging pictures of manifold roles of Chinese capitalists in creation of modern, urbanized colonies and of brokered labor migration, linked by logic of imperialism that set up extraterritorial treaty ports in China. The colluding and conflicting interests of various levels of officialdom and migration service providers in sending and receiving places prefigured those in today's migration business, while colonial legislation that, from 1860s, constrained these interests began to reflect notions of rights and citizenship that remain at core of immigration laws today. The story of Qing government's Washington envoy persuading San Francisco Chinese to ask merchants in Shanghai to declare a boycott of American goods to protest against extension of Exclusion Act in 1905, starting a movement that spread to Chinese in Southeast Asia (pp. 262-65), reveals a breadth and complexity of transnationalism matching that of today. Kuhn reminds us, as well, that at least among merchant elite of 1930s and 1940s, hoarding of citizenships as a way of hedging risks and maximizing benefits was no less common than it is today. …" @default.
