- W14905035 abstract "This experimental study investigated the extent to which proactive personality moderates the main effects of control opportunities on mood (anxiety and fatigue), active coping (reappraisal and planning), affective task reactions (satisfaction and mastery), and task performance during a work simulation task. Participants (N = 96) completed a high-demand inbox task under conditions of high or low control in which they were required to respond to 10 emails in 20 minutes in their role as a HR manager of a fictitious organisation. It was hypothesised that the positive consequences of high control on the outcome variables would be evident for individuals high in proactivity and that they would be protected in the low control condition. In contrast, it was predicted that high control would have deleterious effects on the outcome variables for those low in proactivity, and that such individuals would respond to the task more positively under conditions of low control. In support of these predictions, high proactive individuals reported higher planning and task mastery when performing the task under the high control condition, whereas low proactive individuals reported higher planning and task mastery in the low control condition. As evidence in the literature suggests that control perceptions are more salient predictors of stress reactions than the objective control environment, additional analyses were undertaken in which subjective control was used. These analyses revealed that the positive consequences of subjective control for reducing fatigue, increasing adaptive coping and increasing a sense of task accomplishment were evident for high but not low proactive individuals." @default.
