- W1491518225 abstract "Chemosensory information is the most ancient of all sensory modalities because life arose in aquatic media and because water is an excellent solvent. Consequently, semiochemicals are widely used by aquatic animals for guiding behavioral decision-making. An evolutionary framework for the evolution of semiochemicals is required to explain selection on neurobiology of receivers, and the conditions under which selection favors elaboration of specialization for production and release of semiochemicals by senders. In this chapter, various classes of semiochemicals used by fishes in a plausible trajectory that describes an evolutionary sequence of cues used for orientation, cues used for contextualization, specialization of sender tissues for cue production, and finally, specialization of sender tissues for contextual release of cues have been described. This framework provides an evolutionarily based nomenclature to describe a continuum of aquatic semiochemicals between cues and signals and the evolution of pheromones in communication in fishes." @default.
