The thymus rudiment of 3-week-old nudes consisted of undifferentiated epithelial cells and small cysts or ducts. In older animals, the epithelium differentiated into serous or mucous acini while cysts increased in size. In popliteal and mesenteric lymph nodes of nude rats, the thymus-dependent paracortex was virtually free of lymphocytes, whereas postcapillary venules were thin walled. Germinal centers were only incidentally seen in the follicles. The depletion of the thymus-dependent area in the spleen of nude rats was less pronounced when compared with effects in the lymph nodes. No alterations were observed in the pituitary gland, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, or testes. The absence of morphological effects on the reproductive organs may explain that nude rats of both sexes are fertile; and that the normal sexual difference in body weight is still retained. The normal sexual dimorphism in the salivary glands was less pronounced in the nude rats. The absence of alterations in the endocrine organs of nude rats up to an age of 10 weeks indicates that, by using young adult nude rats for immunological studies, differences in reaction pattern are due to the deficiency of the thymus-dependent immunity." @default.
