- W1494387910 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the targeting and insertion of proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane. Recently, a number of integral proteins of the outer membrane have been described whose functions are defined and whose primary structures predict a membrane topology mediated by a single hydrophobic transbilayer segment. These include the components of the protein import machinery in yeast and Neurospora , Mas70p/MOM72, Mas20p/MOM19, and ISP6, and a protein in mammals that functions as a suppressor of programmed cell death, Bcl-2. Such proteins provide useful model systems to address not only the problem of targeting and insertion into the outer membrane, but as well the complementary problem of explaining how proteins of the inner membrane that also contain uniformly hydrophobic transmembrane segments are able to pass through the outer membrane without being arrested." @default.
