- W1495050781 abstract "One of the priorities in the acute phase of stroke is the prevention and management of secondary medical complications. Recent studies have suggested that better control of these complications, together with an early onset of the mobilization and rehabilitation treatment, contribute towards the improvement in survival and in the functional status of these patients. This work aims to give a practical explanation of the role of rehabilitation in the prevention and management of the principal complications. The diagnostic and treatment programs of dysphagia in acute stroke can significantly reduce the risk of pneumonia and can improve the nutritional and hydration condition of the patient. The incidence of urinary infections can be reduced by adequate treatment of urinary incontinence and retention. Mobilization and early rehabilitation help to prevent the complications caused by immobility, such as pneumonia, thromboembolic disease, pressure sores, contractures, etc. However, they can increase the risk of falls, and thus a preventive program is important, especially in patients at high risk. The sleep disorders that are caused by environmental factors and the medical problems of the patients should also be treated. It could be concluded that rehabilitation seems to have a significant role in the acute phase of stroke, and it is important to involve the nursing staff, the patients and their families in the rehabilitation process." @default.
