The uptake of synthetic polyribonucleotides by Ehrlich ascites sarcoma cells and the rate of this uptake depend on the pH of the incubation medium, (the term uptake includes irreversible binding to the cell surface and penetration into the cell). 2. In a medium of pH 5 the cell membranes of intact ascites cells allow entry of synthetic and natural ribopolynucleotides at a much higher rate than at pH 7.5. 3. This pH effect is reversible. The data strongly suggest that a pH-dependent reversible change of certain structures of the cell membrane is responsible for this effect rather than an alteration of the secondary structure of the polymers at pH 5. 4. The entry of ribopolynucleotides is not reversible at pH 5. 5. The concentration dependence and the time dependence of this entry are identical for incubation at pH 5 and at pH 7.5. 6. Polyribonucleotides which are adsorbed to the surface of the cell membrane at pH 7.5 do not enter the cells under acidic conditions." @default.
