• W1495956775 abstract "Organoclays are clays that contain organic molecules intercalated in their structural layers. The clays more used in the preparation of organoclays are those derived from the smectite group, mainly bentonites, due to reduced crystal dimensions and high capacity of cations exchange, which facilitate the intercalation of the organic compounds. At present, there are many applications of organoclays as sorbents in pollution prevention and environmental remediation, such as treatment of spills, waste water, and hazardous waste landfills. This work aims to obtain organoclays from the Argel bentonite (from Boa Vista town, Paraiba State, Brazil) with cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), a quaternary ammonium salt which possesses surfactant properties, through two different methods of the preparation and the realization of Foster's Swelling tests, in a subsequent step. Different organic solvents, namely gasoline, diesel oil, methanol, ethanol, toluene and acetone, were used in order to investigate the clays compatibility after modification with CTAC. Also, some physical and mineralogical characteristics of the clays have been determined before and after their modification with CTAC, so as to evaluate the organophilization process carried out." @default.
