- W149634055 abstract "In designing bridges to AS5100 it will sometimes be found that the critical load case is the stationary traffic case (S1600), particularly for longer spans. Although stationary traffic lacks a dynamic increment the reduction of headway allows more vehicles to be packed into the area of the deck which influences response of a particular member. When reviewing existing long span bridges designed to an obsolete and less stringent standard it can be important to establish probable maximum stationary traffic loads in order to establish ongoing satisfactory reliability. Weigh-in-motion (WIM) data pertinent to a bridge site can be used to simulate stationary loading by selecting a truck to stop and form a queue of the following cars and trucks, with minimum headway over the loaded length. The simulation can be repeated for each successive truck heading the queue, so that a vast number of load cases are generated for every hour of the day. Using software BRAWIM (registered trade name) this is done assuming cars remain in the queue and alternatively assuming cars are allowed to leave the queue leaving only trucks. To construct a probabilistic model of stationary traffic load the data must be correlated with the frequency of stoppages, high on signalised routes and relatively low on freeways. The results indicate somewhat lower values of UDL than are applied for stationary loading in AS5100. This is a significant factor for reassessment of key bridges in the highway system.
