- W1496354630 abstract "Studies of gender in endangered languages have typically focused on either the role of women in their use or on the (potential) loss of grammatical and discursive knowledge of gender embedded in these languages. This chapter instead attends to the social dynamics and political-ideological dispositions that influence endangered language contexts through the lens of language revitalization, that being one possible response to the defining of a language as endangered, where the roles of speaker, learner, leader, activist, teacher, and so forth become foregrounded. It brings into relief the social dimensions configuring these roles and the significance of gender in these endangered language contexts, where both individuals and institutions play seminal parts in revitalization, mutually constituting and engendering certain roles, such that women may be held responsible for the revitalization of an endangered language yet not authorities on its revitalization." @default.
