- W1497173206 abstract "In the adult horse, there are two endocrinopathic conditions that are amenable to pharmacological intervention, equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). Together, EMS and PPID are responsible for the majority of all equine laminitis cases, and treatment of the primary disease is an essential component of management of laminitis of all etiologies. Treatment of EMS focuses around two major goals, reducing body weight (bwt) and decreasing serum the insulin concentration. The treatment of PPID has several important components. Similar to other aged horses, PPID-affected animals require aggressive preventative health care to maximize their well-being and health status. Many nutraceuticals and natural remedies have been suggested as treatments for PPID. One of the more popular natural remedies is Vitex agnus-castus extract, also known as chasteberry extract. Some of the drugs covered in this chapter include: metformin, pergolide mesylate and cyproheptadine." @default.
