People with mental health problems, or in more severe cases mental disorders, want to be normal citizens just as much as others do. However, new statistics show that sickness absence and long-term disability pensions are increasingly and highly related to a broad spectrum of mental problems. In this chapter, we first discuss the meaning of work for mental health, changes in the workplace over the last few decades and their consequences for those with mental illness and the impact of mental disorders (in particular unipolar and bipolar disorder) on the capacity to work.
