- W1497496937 abstract "Publisher Summary Magnetoencephalography (MEG) appeared about 40 years after the invention of human electroencephalography (EEG). Cohen first succeeded in recording spontaneous magnetic field produced by brain activity in the alpha frequency range. The introduction of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers in the early 1970s made it possible to record both spontaneous and evoked magnetic signals of the human brain without any reference electrodes. In this chapter, magnetic fields related to visual function are reviewed. Merton and Morton first succeeded in stimulating the motor cortex in humans through the intact skull, using transcranial electrical stimulation (TES). Since the report by Merton and Morton, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use of brain stimulation to study both normal and abnormal central nervous function. However, TES causes contraction of scalp muscles and considerable local pain, thus limiting its use for both clinical and research purposes. This problem was overcome by the introduction of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS has been extensively applied to the experimental study of the motor cortex. TMS can also activate other cortical areas, evoking paresthesia, sense of movement, phosphenes and visual suppression. In this chapter, TMS studies in the visual pathways are also reviewed." @default.
